Aims
This course aims to introduce learners to the basic communication knowledge they will need for writing business correspondence and documents, and help them improve their skills and tactics so as to communicate effectively in a modern business environment. It acquaints learners with theories of effective communication, and the effects of technology, discrimination and cultural factors on business communication.

The course also introduces learners to basic Business English and helps them improve their ability to communicate effectively in English in business settings.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

  • Business communication basics
  • Fundamentals of business writing
  • Business writing strategies
  • Business messages I
  • Business messages II

Learning support
There will be five two-hour tutorials and one two-hour surgery.

Assessment
There are two assignments and one examination. Students must use word processing software (such as Microsoft Word) to prepare the assignments, and submit the assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
